Over enthusiasm

Sometimes, when I come across something really good, like an anime series or a song/music. I’ll have this strong urge to get my friends to watch/listen too.

But often when one appears too enthusiastic about getting someone else to watch something, he ends up making the other party uncomfortable. They will then have a bad impression towards that anime and will never watch it at all.

Happened to me once when I tried to get a friend to watch a particular anime series. Now, I’ve given up getting him to watch it as I know he has unconciously blacklisted that anime.

Think Naruto too. Some of you might be irritated at how fans keep saying it’s the best anime. I’m of you by the way. But to be fair, I find the manga good but the anime terrible.

However, I’m also one of those who say Evangelion is the best anime. When asked what’s my favourite, I would no doubt answer Evangelion. Except I will not go crazy telling everyone I come across about it.

Every time someone approaches me, behaving over enthusiastic about selling me a product, I instantly turn them down because I can’t help but suspect that they have an ulterior motive.

Perhaps TV is to blame as they always portray the conman as someone very enthusiastic.

So nowadays, I stop myself from directly telling someone to try something.

Instead, I wait for people to ask, or find a chance to introduce it during a casual conversation, or do subtle advertising like posting a youtube video of the anime’s OP/ED in facebook and hope some curious friend clicks on it.

The trick is to lure people. Like, put a quote of your favourite anime in your MSN status message. When someone asks you what it’s about, you tell him it’s from this anime. His interest will be piqued and you will have succeeded in sharing.

Fatal Frame

A few weeks ago, I found out that Gamescore, a local game shop, has brought in all 3 original Fatal Frame titles for the PS2. When I just bought my PS2 Slim more than 2 years ago,  I went around looking to buy this title but couldn’t find it anywhere. So last week when I finally had some free time after work, I went down to Funan IT Mall to Gamescore to buy all 3.

I love this series so much that even though I’ve already downloaded financially-friendly copies of all 3 games from the internet (only because I couldn’t find it anywhere), I still went ahead and bought the originals without regret.

And now is also a good time to play this game because it’s the Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival. :d
(I’m not very religious/spiritual by the way.)

Every night as I play Fatal Frame, it has never failed to give me the creeps. I do enjoy folklore horror stories like these. One other example I can think of right now is “Silent Hill“.

The gameplay is simple. You explore an abandoned Japanese mansion, going around solving puzzles and armed with only a camera that can exorcise ghosts with a few shots. The ambience and sound in this game easily gives me the chills.

The first time I played Fatal Frame was back in my student days, our class had organized a chalet and someone brought his PS2 there. I played the game all through the night, until there was so much adrenaline that I started hearing things and so I stopped. I had wanted to complete the game before the chalet ends but failed to do so.

The second time was when I went back to visit my relatives in Malaysia. My cousin had PS2 and the second Fatal Frame title. I failed to finish it before I return to Singapore.

Just these 2 encounters with this series, is enough to make me a fan.

Evangelion 1.0

IT’S TOMORROW

:DDDDDDDDDDDDD

And here’s the poster that was to be given out. It’s huge!

I have very high expectations for this movie. Hope it will live up to it! :)

Update:

It lived up to my expectations! I loved it! I do agree with some reviews made by other bloggers that Shinji is a lot less pathetic in this remake.

But the experience was a little disappointing, and by experience, I mean the cinema room is small, and the poor sound equipment made the sound effects a lot less exciting.

I’d like to talk about a few scenes in the movie that got me.

<spoiler> Highlight to read.

The scene where Kisaragi Misato shouts “発進!” (hasshin, launch) for the first time.

When Shinji encounters Ramiel for the first time and he got beamed, his screams for help made me shiver, it felt so real I could feel his pain.

When Shinji struggles to get eva back on it’s feet to fire the next shot at the angel. At this scene, I was praying hard for it not to be over-exaggerated, over-pitiful like that Korean anime whose title slipped my mind. And it turned out to be a great and powerful scene.

For a short moment, you see Shinji struggling back up, and next, you see the Evangelion lift up the positron rifle. That really got me burning inside.

Then after the battle, after Shinji opens the door of Rei’s entry plug and talks to her, you can see the moonlight shining in on them, making it a very moving scene.

</spoiler>

Being quite an eva fan, it won’t be convincing enough for me to reccommend you to watch it. Nevertheless, watch it if you have the chance to!

Rurutia – Selenite

Now I’m crazy over this singer, especially this song. If I’m not wrong, Rurutia wrote and composed the music for this song by herself. Which is something I like about music artists.

English

Ah, a light flickers in the ruined city
And an invisible tune, full of wishes, echoes around

Now, the burned-down sky sinks to the bottom of the water
And is filled with moonlight

Dyed in the blue burning night
Your shoulders are so slender they’re almost not there
I hang on tight to them but still you fade away

Ah, at the end of the universe I found countless little stars
When we met, I learned what dizziness felt like

Now, swallowed up in endless waves of gold and silver
We move towards the sacred river

My heart begins to tremble as you pull me close so sweetly
Forever, always and forever, I want to hold you
So that you won’t disappear

Now, swallowed up in endless waves of gold and silver
We move towards the sacred river

Dyed in the blue burning night
Your shoulders are so slender they’re almost not there
I hang on tight to them but still you fade away

My heart begins to tremble as you pull me close so sweetly
Forever, always and forever, I want to hold you
So that you won’t disappear
