PC at work dies

Tech support from D-link called me, after a short chat, we concluded that the unit is faulty and I’ll have to bring it back to the shop for a 1 to 1 replacement.

Computer at work refused to boot into BIOS. Spent the whole morning shopping for a new one. I now have a Quad-Core CPU.

Will work on restoring my blog over the weekend.

My first NAS

Purchased a D-link DNS-323 with 2x 1TB WD Cavier Green (as to why the fuck did I buy WD again, I don’t know.) harddisks to run RAID 1 and to start backing up files.

Brought it home, unpacked everything, begin setting up, only to find that the unit is faulty. The web UI doesn’t work.

The beginning of a series of nightmares

Server’s harddisk died.

It will cost $2050.00 SGD to recover the data. So I say screw it.

Simply because with that amount of money, I could fly myself to Japan and have a great time to make up for this loss.

And this harddisk that died, was expensive as it’s meant for 24/7 operation. It lasted less than a year? what the heck…

The report says:

Physical damage to the read/write head assembly.
Electrical failures located throughout the printed circuit board.
Multiple read errors located throughout the platter surface(s).
Possible file structure damage.

P.S. It’s a Western Digital RE2 harddisk. :(

My next computer…

Will be another SFF (Small Form Factor), XPC barebone.

Primary function is a web server.

OS: Windows Server 2008

CPU: Dual-Core or Quad-Core. Depending on what’s available on the market and price.

Memory: 2GB or 4GB.

Harddisk: Something with 10K RPM and SATA-2

For the existing one, I’ll use it for LAN parties.

Not buying soon, lol. Just a bit of daydreaming!

fucking PSUs

I seem to have very bad luck with PSUs this year.

When I came back from Bangkok earlier this month, back in the office, I pressed the power switch on my PC and it didn’t respond. I switched the power cable and the whole office had a power trip and the fuse on the second power cable blew.

Convinced that the problem lies with the PSU, I went down to Sim Lim Square to get a new one.

Installed the new PSU, everything works fine again. A week later, weird things started happening, a burnt smell came out and my whole PC rebooted itself. I ignored it first.

Then it happened again a few days later. This time I brough the unit down to Ban Leong, the local distributor that sells this brand of PSU I bought and deals with any defective products they sold. A guy at the service counter did a 1 to 1 exchange for me and gave me a new one that’s still wrapped up.

Brought the new one back, installed it, a few hours later, it happened again >_>

Opened up the PC, poked my nose around, couldn’t smell anything from the other PC parts except the PSU.

Called up Ban Leong, described the problem and asked if they could test the PSU I brought in, they said they can’t because there’s a risk of tripping the whole building and they don’t want that to happen. But the guy said he will do another 1 to 1 exchange for me. If I go down again.

Sigh…
