Falling Asleep

Falling asleep is a common thing in FFXI. Because the North American players are about 16-18 hours (guesstimate) behind Singapore/Japan time, when it’s evening in SG/JP, it’s late night in NA. Thus, some players who refuse to logout but continue to play in an experience points PT(party) tend to fall asleep.

I’ve come across such players before. A black mage in my PT suddenly stopped casting magic and he was just sitting there not responding to our calls. I admit falling asleep once [X|]. But it was at a coffer key PT where we’re all fighting skeletons hoping they would drop the keys to treasure coffers. I fell asleep on my chair and woke up to the familiar BGM of Jeuno. The japanese were kind enough to give me Warp II.

Last night I got invited by a Japanese player to form an EXP PT at Yuhtunga Jungle. It was fun playing Thief and somehow I enjoy taking hate off the tank, even when playing Dark Knight. Not through Provoke but by simply dealing lots of damage. As a Thief, I relied on Sneak Attack + weaponskill to deal enough damage for the damn goblin to keep hitting me.

This is where a Ninja subjob comes in. With Utsusemi:Ichi, I could absorb up to 3 hits. Time it well and I can recast it and absorb another 3 hits. Hopefully during these 6 hits, the tank is able to regain enough hate to have the monster start hitting him back.

I digress! [X|]

Anyway, it was clear to the rest of the JP players that I could read a bit of Japanese. After we killed a goblin and was resting, one of the JP player (hereby referred to as JP-A) said:

Rough translation: “Since he knows Japanese, teach this foreigner neochi lol”

Obviously, I was the only foreigner in the PT. I knew it was directed at me. And I admit I even thought neochi (I read this as “neo-chi”) was some kind of program to assist me in FFXI, haha. So I asked the leader, the JP player who invited me and knew some English.

To which he replied in PT chat. (I guess it’s kind of rude to speak to a person through private message. Somewhat like talking behind someone’s back.)

Shock! [8|] Did they think I was falling asleep? This is where I assume I must’ve been playing badly or JP-A said that because I missed a skillchain with him. (T_T)

The party carried on till 12.30am SG time, 1.30am JP time. At this point the JP-A began to stop moving when our puller pulled monsters to camp. He would start moving in 1 or 2 minutes later. This was when I suspect he was “neochi”. w

Then his friend began joking and said “JP-A=neochi w”. We laughed and I joked about casting Barsleepra (a spell to increase resistance against sleep magic/attacks).

All in all it was a fun party. Before disbanding, leader said it was good and he’s happy. We played for 4-5 hours and everyone levelled 3 times. I played around with my IME at work and got the words “寝落ち” (neochi, which I now understand as “ne-ochi”). Did some babelfishing and got the translation “Falling asleep”.

Obtained Chaos Cuirass and Chaos Gauntlets

Just a quick and simple blog entry on my FFXI adventures. Wyred has gone lazy. [X|]

The other day I was skilling up and helping 2 friends get their Black Mage Testimony and Monk Testimony at Castle Oztroja. These Testimonies are required for them to fight Maat, and only by winning the fight against Maat can they proceed to level up above level 70.

It didn’t take too long before the 2 testimonies drop. Then we decided to stay longer for my coffer key. And it didn’t take too long before the key dropped and with my Red Mage friend, Puipuipui, we went in search for the Treasure Coffer for my Artifact body armor, Chaos Cuirass. Just 3 minutes into searching for it, we found it. [XD]

Last night, I decided to camp for my gauntlets coffer at Eldieme Necropolis. Hearing that the coffer re-spawns in 30 minutes and that it’s a highly sought after coffer, I decided to camp at a spot where it’s safe and where it’s a spot where the coffer might spawn.

Subbed Ninja for Tonko:Ichi, bought 3 stacks of Silent Oils at 7500gil each [X(], I set off and after an hour of waiting, I gave up. I needed help to access the other coffer-spawning areas and it takes at least another person. So I checked the linkshell and asked Holykau for help. A level 75 WHM who probably has Teleport-Vahzl should I ever need it. There’s one coffer spot which requires access from Beaucedine Glacier by the way.

While waiting for Holykau to meet me at Eldieme, I ran out to explore the nearest coffer spots and I died because I forgot Invisibility (from Tonko:Ichi) wore off and I aggroed Azer. Bomb-type monster. Good thing I contacted Holykau for help because he has Raise 3 and I lost only 100+ exp.

We checked the basement level but no coffers, I wanted to check the North open area of Eldieme for coffer. So I got Holykau to pull the switch as I wait at the door. And there it was, the coffer sitting at the corner of the open space. Too excited to notice my Sneak was wearing, I opened the coffer and ran back aggroing Kas and Utukkus on the way. Needless to say, I died again and trapped in a tunnel unable for Holykau to give me Raise 3.

With no one to help trigger the switch, we gave up and I returned to Home Point, taking a loss of 2000 exp. Which is roughly equivalent to an hour of fighting in an EXP PT. [:(]

Nvermind that. I gathered other linkshell friends and we set off to Castle Zvahl Baileys to kill Dark Spark and finish off the gauntlets quest and acquire my Chaos Gauntlets.

Now I have my AF Helmet armor and AF leg armor left to a complete set.

Venerer Ring and Jaeger Ring. Can I have it?

The recent December updates to Final Fantasy XI has introduced 2 new rings into the game. Accuracy rings like the Sniper Ring and Archer Ring are highly sought after by many people and thus, it costs a lot to own one. So what Square Enix did to please poor players like me is to introduce 2 new accuracy rings both of which are available by completing a quest. Though not as good as them Sniper’s, it would be good substitute for them.

So I googled the web and browsed many FFXI sites, I managed only to find information on the Venerer Ring. It’s a quest that starts in the Tavnazia regions. A place I cannot go without completing the 3 Promyvions – Dem, Holla and Mea. I’ve completed Dem and Mea already. As a Warrior with Monk subjob. I’m lucky to be accepted because Ninja subjobs are more preffered because of Utsusemi:Ichi.

So now, I’ve soloed my Ninja to lv 12. At first I thought that with high enough Bastok fame, I would have enough Tenshodo fame to accept the quest for Utsusemi:Ichi scroll. But found out I didn’t have enough after travelling all the way to Norg. [:(] . Some quests require a certain level of fame in order for the NPC to offer it to you.

In order to increase my Tenshodo fame, I have 3 options, 2 involve trading items to an NPC. Those items are expensive. The third option involves smuggling goods from San d’Oria to Jeuno. If you succeed, you get 1000gil. If you get caught, your airship pass gets revoked for the next 24 hours. (or until after 12am Japan time). Meaning you cannot take the airship from Jeuno to anywhere else.

I tried smuggling but got caught the second try. I tried buying Zinc Ores to trade but they were too expensive. I ended up investing on a set of Field equipment which improves Logging, Mining and Harvesting results, and went mining. Through mining, I will have a chance to dig up Zinc Ores. Turns out that mining can be quite fun, running around the mines, searching for a Mining Point.

Eventually, I end up with many tasks and short-term goals.

Current Goals:

  1. Mine Zinc Ores, trade them to NPC for Tenshodo fame.
  2. Skill up Smithing to 20 in order to craft Iron Ingots out of the Iron Ores I dig up from mining.
  3. Once I accumulate enough Tenshodo fame, acquire Utsusemi:Ichi scroll from quest in Norg.
  4. Level Ninja to 15 as a subjob for my Warrior in order to be accepted into Promyvion-Holla expeditions.
  5. Complete Promyvion-Holla and explore Tavnazia for the Venerer Ring quest.
  6. Obtain Venerer Ring

Other tasks:

  1. Achieve Rank 6.
  2. Achieve a skill level of 10 on all crafts, fishing optional.

Let me tell you about the Gil Farmers

Long long time ago, in the southern province of China, there lived a bunch of
people who take shifts so they could camp a Notorious Monster 24/7.

Why did they do so? Because this NM drops an Archer’s Ring which can be sold
at the Auction House for up to 200,000 gil. And why do they seem to need these
gil desperately? So they can sell it to a company called IGE for food, and IGE
then sells those gil to other desperate people for real life money.

This results in farmers getting greedy and jacking up the prices to a
possible 500,000 gil. Then desperate people who are lazy to earn that amount of
gil then buys them from IGE, and frustrates a huge population of FFXI players
who refuse to pay
real-life money every month, just to spend in-game money that are again, bought
with real-life money
.

Anyway, knowing the fact and even though I had been warned, I attempted to
camp Stroper Chyme for those Archer’s Rings. I needed the accuracy boost so as
to land more hits during fights. Upon reaching the area where it spawns, there
was a gil-farmer, easily identifiable by his weird name and another Japanese who
probably shares my purpose.

Last night together with Evasama, out of about 10 spawns of Stroper Chyme, we
only managed to grab 2. The ring didn’t drop. I heard it had a fucking low drop
rate, perhaps 1-2 a full day’s worth of Stroper Chymes. I was mentally prepared
so I didn’t end up too frustrated from losing the NM to the gil farmers.

Moral of this blog entry: 24/7 NM camping for the purpose of earning real
life money is bad mmkay?

DRKs aren’t given up on yet!

Last night, as I was about to change my Job to a level 10 Thief in Windurst,
I received 2 tells from different parties, both interested in having me for an
exp party. [XD] I’m happy because I wasn’t even in Jeuno and I didn’t have my
“Looking For Party” flag up.

The first one came from a Japanese player and with my meagre understanding of
Japanese, I was able to understand that he/she was asking how much exp I need to
level up. But she had to reject me because I was close to levelling and if I
did, the experience points gained per kill would drop significantly because the
monster would be of lower difficulty once I levelled.

The second one was from an American, who mistook me for a Dragoon. This is
the second time I got mistaken for a Dragoon in a week. Probably because the
acronyms for Dark Knight and Dragoon are DRK and DRG respectively. Anyways,
I got invited into the party and because at that time, we were
desperate for a tank so a level 57 Paladin was invited. We had a huge exp hit
but it didn’t matter to me (since I was close to hitting level 55) nor the
2 Japanese players already in the party.

Before we set out, I bought a Royal Knight’s Chainmail for 70K gil, thinking
I could finally get out of my Brigandine this evening. But alas! Our Bard
disconnected and without her Madrigal’s, my attacks keep missing. Absorb-AGI
helped only for a short duration and weakens as time passes.

Everything ended with me, 240 exp points to next level. T_T

Still, the fact that I got 2 invites despite being in a different place and
no intention for an exp party that night made me glad. I might hold back
levelling Thief for a while and see how it goes.
